Welcome to my Interviewing Others activity, which gives students a lot of practice on conversations. Check out this excerpt from the training video I did for the New York City Department of Education. The next activity is Interviewing Others. Several years ago, I started having my students interview staff members because a lot of what makes someone a good interviewer is also what makes someone a good conversationalist. And then the pandemic hit and I started seeing my students over zoom, as I'm sure many of you did as well, and then I started having them interview their family members. This activity includes questions to choose from, whether you're interviewing a staff member, then I have different questions for a senior if they're in high school and want to interview one of the seniors, or if they're at home and they want to interview a family member. And it also includes a post interview questionnaire that the students fill out, and a post interview evaluation that if they interview a staff member, the staff member can fill out afterwards. Thanks for reviewing my description of this handout. If you like what you've seen here, please click and subscribe to my channel. I'm not exactly sure what that means, but my web guy told me it's a thing!

Interviewing Others
This material covers choosing questions, setting up an interview, practicing, and the necessary subsequent assessment and discussion.
Many of the characteristics inherently necessary to be a good interviewer mirror attributes found in good conversationalists. Much like in regular conversations, a genuine interest in learning about another is key to a good interview. This activity is a comprehensive resource to help students practice interviewing others (such as family members, friends, or school staff), allowing those who feel apprehensive about interviews to quickly relax and feel more competent. It helps learners master conversational skills such as asking follow-up questions to extend conversations and to make their conversation partner feel genuinely heard. Therapeutic notes are included to help facilitate a execution of the multi-step activity.
