Welcome to my Subjects, Verbs, Objects and Adverbial Phrases worksheet. Check out this excerpt from the training video I did for the New York City Department of Education. It's one thing to identify subjects, verbs, and objects in simple sentences, but in higher level, more complex sentences it can get a lot trickier. And one of the big reasons why I want my students to be able to identify subjects, verbs, and objects is because they need to do subject-verb agreement which we'll talk a little more about in a minute. You need to know which subject goes with which verb to make sure you have singular or plural agreement, so I found that I'm able to teach my students how to identify prepositional phrases, and adverbial phrases, and kind of take them out of the sentence, and what's left over is the core of the sentence and that's where they're going to find the subject, verb, and, if there is one, the object.
